Sony's PlayStation 3 still trailing Nintendo's Wii

More

Sony Corp. (NYSE: SNE)'s PlayStation 3 worries are continuing, as the Nintendo Wii continues its strong performance in the console gaming arena through March. In the U.S., sales of video games, hardware and accessories rose 33% year over year to $1.1 billion. The biggest impact? Why, actual game consoles, of course. The biggest winner? Why, the Nintendo Wii, of course.

Where is Sony's "company-rescuing" PlayStation 3 headed six months after its U.S. launch? Good question. The Nintendo Wii bested its technologically superior competitor in March, selling 259,000 for the month, while Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ: MSFT)'s Xbox 360 sold 199,000 units. Sony's laggard sales came in at 130,000 units for March. Why is Sony's system selling so slowly?

A few factors (among many). The price is still $600 for the mainstream version (way high), and the Nintendo Wii gives gamers a new twist that many are finding is great for gaming: motion-sensitive controllers and active participation. Sometimes technological prowess is no match for capturing the emotion of the game players and involving them in the game as much as possible beyond button-pressing.
